Writing a Hospitality Management Resume

Follow the steps of our resume writing guide and you’ll have a killer CV in no time!

1. Resume Header

Ensure your header clearly states your Name, Email Address and Contact Number. There is no need to put your home address or identification number.

2. Breaking Down the Hospitality Manager Resume Sample

First, the candidate captures our attention with an effective Executive Summary, the opening paragraph of her Resume.

As Hospitality Professionals, you can think of this as your elevator pitch.

In the 6 seconds recruiters spend reading your CV, they will read your Executive Summary first.

Be sure to present your unique selling point and career narrative in your Executive Summary.

Of the two Hospitality Resume Executive Summaries below, which do you think is more effective?

WRONG
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
  • Hospitality Manager with experience in hotel operations at leading hotels and resorts in Malaysia.
  • Excellent at dealing with different types of people, from clients to customers and other team members.
  • Stellar leadership, interpersonal and mentorship skills, with a special ability to build relationships with colleagues and senior management from diverse backgrounds to meet and surpass established KPIs.
  • Fun, outgoing personality, who is easy to integrate into any team.

What makes the second one better?

It demonstrates:

  • Candidate’s personal career narrative, from the prior companies she’s worked at, to the specific hospitality skills she is experienced in. In contrast, the first executive summary is bland and generic – what we call motherhood statements.
  • An understanding of what the recruiter is looking for. Every point answers the “So what?” question.
    • So what if the candidate has a fun, outgoing personality? It means she’s extremely comfortable dealing with clients, and you can rely on her to resolve customer concerns.
    • So what if she is organised and meticulous? This implies she creates structure in the fast-paced and chaotic nature of the hospitality sector – a perfect personality fit!
    • Candidate’s Key Achievements. Significant Highlights are akin to testimonials of your skills. As a professional in the service industry, you know how a stellar customer testimonial leads to HUGE returns. Achievements show recruiters why the candidate should be hired. We’ll elaborate more on Achievements below.

It isn’t easy to craft an effective elevator pitch. Likewise, writing a succinct Executive Summary is equally challenging. Don’t fret – we’re here to help you! Just send us your Resume for a free review – we’ll look through it and share our feedback – all at no cost!

3.Key Skills to include in a Hospitality Manager Resume

After captivating the recruiter with a strong Executive Summary, you want to show them specific skills you can bring to the table.

In this section, insert skills that you are proficient in. Be mindful to include exact keywords used in the job description. This increases the chances of getting your resume past ATS scanners (resume scanning software).

ResumeWriter Tip: Scan the job application and add the exact key phrases used in the description, into your resume.

Examples of Hospitality Resume Key Skills:

  • Customer Service
  • Conflict Management and Resolution
  • Attention to Detail
  • Teamwork
  • Multi-tasking
  • Flexibility
  • Time Management
  • Communication
  • Interpersonal Skills
  • Problem Solving
  • Cultural Awareness
  • Language Fluency
  • Strategic Planning/Roadmapping
  • Reservation Systems
  • Report Generation

4.Achievements and Work Experiences in Hospitality Manager Resumes

Work Experiences

Break your work experiences into 2 parts – daily workscopes and achievements.

When writing daily workscopes, cluster them around responsibilities and high-level summaries, supporting them with metrics. Omit implied workscopes to save space.

Keep your CV short and sharp!

Here’s a sample Work Experiences section in a Hospitality Manager Resume.

WRONG
  • Responsible for large team of staff for 5-star hotel. Took charge of Housekeeping department hiring process by redesigning workflow from ground up and established their service standards and protocols for daily operations.
  • Trained Housekeeping service staff so they become more efficient at their job. Designed training programmes independently and sought management approval.

Here’s another one.

Here’s how we improved his resume’s Work Experiences.

RIGHT
  • Supervise team of 100 housekeeping staff in overseeing Housekeeping and Bell Services for 5-star hotel in Malaysia; qualified trainer for both departments
  • Pivotal in restructuring Housekeeping department; took charge of hiring process, established service standards and protocols for daily operations and ensured strict compliance for excellent service delivery
  • Design and execute training programmes and plans for Housekeeping and Bell Service staff. Improve departments’ expertise by conducting constant training and development programmes and delegating responsibilities strategically
  • Conduct trend analysis through surveys, progress reports, and customer feedback. Conceptualise and implement corrective action plans to address areas of improvement
RESUMEWRITER   |   ASIA

Clearly, the latter Work Experience example reads so much better than the former.

Why?

  • The second Work Experience example is easier to read. Each bulletpoint specifies one task. In contrast, the first line of the former example combines multiple tasks in the same line. Candidates do this to impress recruiters with their hefty scope of work, but end up confusing them instead. Don’t do this!
  • Specific traits are highlighted. One point conveys how she restructured the Housekeeping department. Another marks her improvement of their training processes. Every point clearly highlights a skill or task.
  • Implied work experiences like conducting daily housekeeping or attending department meetings are omitted.

5. Key Achievements

Writing effective workscopes is important.

But it’s only the first half of the Job Description section.

Want to make a hiring manager go “WOW!” when they read your resume?

Achievements elevates your Resume from an okay 4 stars to a glamorous 5 stars.

How do you write great Achievements in your Resume?

Take a look at this example.

RIGHT
Significant Highlights
  • Spearheaded setting up Park Operations Team for opening of Legoland Malaysia. Entire team was pivotal in attracting and retaining more than 2 million visitors within 9 months from opening
  • Promoted from Park Operations Officer to Park Operations Manager within 12 months of employment
RESUMEWRITER   |   ASIA

The candidate’s workscope tells us she played an important role in setting up Legoland in Malaysia.

But her Achievements section shows that her efforts led to attracting and retaining millions of visitors in less than a year of opening.

Isn’t that an amazing feat?

Think of how many recruiters she’d impress with this one Achievement.

Writing great Achievements are the secret sauce to a successful resume. As a Hospitality Professional, what kinds of Achievements could you write?

  • Include projects which you have led and their resulting tangible business benefits. These benefits could be:
  • Visitor Numbers and Revenue
  • Upskilling and Training Programmes
  • Media Features
  • Local/Regional Hospitality Awards
  • Tie your projects to business benefits if possible. Hiring managers and employers want to see your results.
  • One especially crucial area to talk about is your experience in enhancing the customer experience or driving traffic/visitors.
  • Hospitality is so task-driven; what kinds of Achievements can be included?
  • Are my Achievements substantial enough?
  • Are some of my Workscopes essential; or should I omit them?
