Resume Header

Ensure your header clearly states your Name, Email Address and Contact Number. There is no need to put your home address or identification (NRIC) number.

If you have a PMP certification, do state it clearly in your name. Eg. John Tan, PMP

Executive Summary

The executive summary gives a quick overview of your work history. Here, we want to communicate the candidate’s experience in IT project management and a brief line or 2 about large projects you’ve delivered.

Technical Skills

This section includes all the keywords resume scanning softwares often use. Its important to place key softwares/languages here relevant to the job ad you’re applying for. Scan the job application and parrot back the key phrases they’ve mentioned into your resume.

It is highly recommended to utilise a table here to show your full technical toolbox. This helps give the reader a quick overview of your skills in a single glance.

Work Experiences

Always break your work experiences into 2 parts – your daily workscope and your projects.

For the daily workscope, include a high level summary. Workscopes which are implied can be omitted. Remember, you want to keep your resume short and sharp for the recruiter. Do not state obvious workscopes like “Built new database using Oracle SQL etc”. Instead, focus on the business side of your abilities. Your technical skills are already well covered in your technical skills table above.

Your achievements section is critical to differentiating your application from that of your peers. Include projects which you have led and their resulting tangible business benefits. These benefits can be in the form of:

  • Cost savings to the firm
  • Improved business analytic / transparency leading to better business insights
  • Enhanced internal controls
  • Streamlined business processes resulting in higher productivity
  • New business arm leading to higher revenues / profits

Always tie back your projects to business benefits. This is what the hiring manager and employer want to see. Ultimately, they want to know you can bring great value to their organisation.

As far as possible do include metrics or numbers in your achievements. This helps to add substance to your resume and give the reader an objective view of your skills and abilities. Here’s a good example: “Led team of 5 and budget of 12 million to deliver full end-to-end SDLC involving development of new accounting software”

Education & Misc Information

Be sure to include your professional memberships with you education. Courses such as PMP and ITIL are critical. If you currently do not have these certifications, do consider taking up the courses. The Workforce Development Authority (WDA) has several heavily discounted courses you can attend.

Putting it all together

This is what the final resume product looks like.
